Colombian Electoral Circus, the Hot Potato Game

Really absurd was the most recent polling day in Colombia, where the country was supposed to define members of the House, Senate, Andean Parliament and Presidential Primaries.

Half week now since it took place, many things can be put into consideration after a political turmoil was triggered due to some decisions taken by Registraduría regarding to postpone some results, the denounces from OAS stating that there was electoral fraud, the ignorance by the population regarding who is to be the Conservative Party Presidential Candidate one month away from Presidential Elections and the accusations by some blaming on the citizens who were in charge of the voting ballots. Even massive food poisoning of scrutineers was registered.

It’s surprising how elections trigger so many passions here in Colombia and although being used to politicians sending harsh messages to others, scandals due to alleged corruption, political dirty tricks and massive electoral fraud, the situation is still critical and it showcases how many interests are in between.

The most surreal development has to do with the controversy triggered by the alleged alcohol consumption by National Registrador during the polling day. The president himself has requested to Procuraduria to start an investigation to determine whether the public employee had a bad behavior or not.

True or false? What is indeed true is that the biggest looser from this chaos is the community itself. Public Opinion remain skeptical on critics, scandals, tough political environment and a rising uncertainty since it doesn’t know whether to focus on the information provided by media or politicians. An overall feeling of indignation is also taking over the population due to the little effectiveness shown by public institutions, the big tons of bureaucracy in processes making even slower the release of the information.

Let’s see and wait…according to an interview by RCN’s domestic signal last Monday, the Registrador said that the Conservative Party Presidential Candidate was to be known no later than this week. That’s the kind of thing we hope to see and so that one of the worst electoral crisis in Colombia’s history finally ends.
